Dyslexia can also give people a powerful set of perceptions in understanding the world. The incidence of dyslexia among artists is so high that many people believe you can't be an artist unless you are at least a bit dyslexic. I'm dyslexic - I find it harder to read and write than non-dyslexics, but on the upside: I have perfect plumb (I can tell if a line is straight by looking at it, I can read and write forwards, backwards or upside down. It takes me longer to learn, but once I've learned it I have almost perfect recall forever after. Dyslexics are simply people who are visual/spacial thinkers - and the only reason this presents a problem is because we live in a culture that favours oral/language-based thinking above everything else. Now parents are more aware if their kids are showing signs of dyslexia.
